YGB Style Guide

Listed below are requirements for us to fulfill our obligations as a professional performance troupe. The list is open for discussion, however the bulk of these things are non-negotiable. Please read this entire page in full with your ygb student.

Image

It is important that we have a uniform image that reflects the best of what we are and what we are capable of.

  • Clean and fresh pair of black jeans that fit

  • Fresh athletic shoes/sneakers - sparkles, fun designs are cool

  • Clean and fresh YGB shirts (do not wear outside of shows- KEEP FRESH)

  • PRO-TIP: hang shirt in closet until performance days so it’s always in the same place and bring a separate shirt to wear on performance days

  • Arrive to shows in uniform and looking your best!

Appearance

Our individual appearance is a reflection of ourselves, our families and the group. We must again maintain a look that reflects the values and mission of YGB.

  • Brushed teeth and washed faces

    • PRO-TIP: do this before putting on YGB shirts to avoid stains

  • Fresh hair - picked out, braided down, line up, re-twist, afro puffs, afro, etc.

  • Lotion and deodorant

    • no deodorant/toothpaste on shirts

  • Youthful look - no makeup/accessories

  • no earrings larger than a dime (no dangly earrings or hoops)

  • no jewelry (bracelets, necklaces, rings, etc.)

  • bare-faced & natural

  • Clean shirt and pants - with a belt (if necessary)

  • No undershirt peeking out

    • PRO-TIP: wear a black undershirt in case it’s unavoidable

Etiquette:

We must always remember we are actively trying to raise money, so we must maintain a certain etiquette at our performances that reflect well on the group and inspire people to give.  This includes everything listed above and below, and also maximizing each moment as an opportunity.

  • Please give notice if you cannot attend or will be late to a show or rehearsal

    • preferably days in advance (we are a professional company)

  • Arrive to shows dressed and ready to go

  • Do not lose your voice (take care of it + drink tea)

  • Practice giving a firm handshake

  • Practice looking people in the eye, saying your name, and saying "thank you"

  • Memorize your pieces

    • Practice 20-30 minutes from home every day on non-rehearsal days!

  • Hand out flyers, invite your friends to join, and speak on behalf of the group

    • our first line of recruitment for new students is the kids themselves and then the families

  • Do not be shy or intimidated, be confident and be yourself.

  • Maintain your self control both in behavior, language, and disposition

    • remember the group, the mission, and who you represent.

  • Make sure your shirts are fresh and clean

  • Believe in yourself!
